From Ben at Neshobe House:

“Earlier today I went to walk my dog and noticed quite a bit of black smoke coming out of the chimney with a creosote smell. Although I didn’t see an active fire, I’ve lived here nearly 14 years and I’ve never seen anything like that. I called the emergency number and whoever was on duty told me that they would let them know but it probably just needed to be cleaned and would be fine. I had a hunch that they both would show up rather quickly and they did! I was just coming outside again with my dog, and they showed up. I was right! Justin went down to the basement to check the boiler and there was smoke coming from the boiler room. Kellie and Justin pulled the fire alarm and made sure everyone got out. They stayed here and made sure everything was safe to go back in before they left. Justin also explained to everybody what happened and what was being done to rectify the situation. We have two boilers, and he just shut the broken one down and they’re going to take it apart with the heating contractor and fix or replace it.

I’m very grateful for both of their intuition.

I’m grateful that I called and I’m grateful for Kellie and Justin. I’m grateful this happened during the day and then I saw it when I did it and I gotten worse and happened at night I may have been in bed on the outcome could’ve been different.

I’m extremely grateful for Justin and Kellie and I sincerely hope the Housing Authority truly understands what an amazing asset they both are, and I hope they are both compensated appropriately for their professionalism and caring. Their incredible people that are meticulous in their work, but they also care about people on a deeper level when it’s warranted and it’s a beautiful thing.”

Last Saturday morning, there was a fire at the Morse Block (a property owned by The Housing Foundation, Inc, VSHA’s non-profit affiliate).  Tyson, Kelly, and Jason were immediately on the scene.  Fortunately, no one was hurt, and the fire was contained to one unit (a stove fire). However, the sprinkler system was activated causing flooding to the first-story commercial spaces.  Tyson and his team have been working at the property most of this past week, making repairs and coordinating repairs so that the two businesses impacted most can reopen!
